On Monday at the Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meeting the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League will release a report on plasma arc incineration. Louis Zeller, the League’s Science Director, will present the report and recommend a moratorium on waste incineration, including plasma arc.

Recently, Pittsboro’s mayor and the Greater Pittsboro Community Development Corporation have been considering industry proposals for incineration of sewage sludge and municipal solid waste. The League’s report will provide information based on Zeller’s analysis of a draft air pollution permit for a plasma arc incinerator proposed for St. Lucie, Florida. The Florida plasma arc facility would be the first large-scale plasma arc municipal solid waste incinerator in the nation.
