BREDL endorses Energy Action's
Declaration of Independence from Dirty Energy
BREDL has endorsed the
"Declaration of Independence from Dirty
Energy" as outlined by Energy Action, a new
North American Youth Clean Energy Coalition.
On October 19th 2004, thousands of youth from
across North America will declare their
independence from dirty energy by challenging all
candidates for office and leaders of our
institutions to lay out their plan for a complete
transition beyond dirty energy sources such as
fossil fuels, nuclear and incineration.
As the Coalition mentions, "We believe that
our dependence on dirty energy in the cause of a
wide range of social, political and environmental
problems. Our mountains and wild lands are being
ripped apart for coal and gas; our economy
suffers from high gas prices; our dependence on
oil is fueling international conflict; and across
the country, people are suffering from
respiratory problems because of dirty air. Our
dependence on dirty energy contributes to
environmental injustices on both the local and
international scale. As such, we are working to
create a strong and diverse coalition to build
toward a clean energy future."
Energy Action (http://www.energyaction.net)
is a powerful new youth-led coalition of 17
student networks and progressive organizations
committed to leveraging our collective power and
creating change for a clean, efficient, just and
renewable energy future. The coalition
facilitated 130 youth and student-led actions
across the US and Canada on Fossil Fools Day,
April 1st, 2004, proving that young people would
no longer be fooled by fossil fuels and dirty
energy. This fall, we aim to collect over 30,000
signatures on the Declaration of Independence
from Dirty Energy, and generate 300 actions in
campuses and communities for clean energy on
October 19th.
