DEQ public hearing regarding proposed CPV Warren
580 Mw gas-fired power plant. This facility will
be located five miles from the Shenandoah
National Park, which is considered the second
most polluted U.S. national park.
Virginia has permitted 16 new
power plants since deregulation. Most of this
10,000 Mw of new power will be sold out of state.
While the Virginia State Corporation Commission
approved the application on March 13, 2003, one
SCC Commissioner did express concerns. In the
March 2003 decision, SCC Commissioner Moore
stated "I write separately to express my
continued concern and mounting alarm at the
apparent failure of the Commonwealth to address
adequately the impact of power plants on the
environment of the Commonwealth. This case is of
particular concern because the proposed facility
is within five miles of the Shenandoah National
Park, a Class I area."
