November 21, 2000 - Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League and our Halifax County
chapter, Citizens Against Regional Dumping, held a press conference and rally on the steps of
the courthouse in Halifax, NC.  CARD members spoke against the county’s plans for a
regional, commercial landfill to be operated by WMX in their community.  Details about the press conference (including photos and statements) plus a report on the landfill. UPDATE: On December 5, 2000, the Halifax Board of Commissioners released a statement which said,  "The Board of Commissioners will not consider the proposal from Waste Management Inc. for a Solid Waste Disposal Franchise.  As a result, the public hearing and action on the franchise request have been taken off the agenda.  It is the intent of the Halifax County Commissioners not to consider this proposal further."

April 20, 2000 - At its annual meeting, Duke Shareholders voted in favor of burning plutonium (MOX) fuel. They rejected a proposal to refuse plutonium fuel for Duke reactors.

April 7, 2000 - A federal judge has rejected an anti-nuclear coalition's motion to block an American-funded shipment of Russian plutonium to Canada, saying he lacked the jurisdiction to act.

April 7, 2000 - Virginia Power drops out of Plutonium Fuel Consortium. Virginia Power has announced that it's dropping its plans to burn Plutonium fuel at its North Anna Nuclear Power Plant in Louisa County, Virginia. Duke Energy has said it will stay in the Plutonium fuel program.

March 16, 2000 - The Great Smoky Mountains National Park registers its earliest bad ozone day on March 8, 2000.

March 9, 2000 - Neighbors Against the Cullasaja Asphalt Plant (NACAP) reports an Asphalt Plant was stopped in Franklin NC. The Environmental Management Commission voted to deny the air quality permit to Rhodes Brothers Paving Company in the floodplain of the Cullasaja River (Macon County).

March 03, 2000 - Federal Appeals Court Upholds EPA Air Pollution Ruling. 19 states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, & Tennessee will have to curtail smog-causing chemicals from power plants.

March 02, 2000 - Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck issues new road policy. 60 day Public Comment period ends May 2, 2000.

Feb 15, 2000 - NC Department of Human Health Services Stakeholders Meeting  in Raleigh.  The meeting is one of a series of ongoing meetings to gather input on the tests to be conducted by the state on soil, water, and air samples taken near the Carolina Solite hazardous waste-burning aggregate kiln in Aquadale, NC.

Feb 15, 2000 - Indian Point, NY radiation steam leak - emergency declared A leak in a steam generator at a Hudson River nuclear power plant resulted in a brief release of radioactive steam. Operators manually shut down the reactor and declared an "Alert" following indications of a steam generator tube leak.

Feb 10, 2000 - The Department of Commerce has contacted Anson County about the possible siting of a pulp mill on the Pee Dee River.  It is believed the mill will produce towels and napkins. 

Feb 03, 2000 - Federal Judge throws out Virginia Trash Laws/Virginia will Appeal the decision - A federal judge has ruled against Virginia's trash laws passed by the 1999 Virginia General Assembly to limit importation of trash from New York and other out-of-state areas. The new laws were scheduled to go into effect July 1, 1999; however, in June 1999, Waste Management Holdings, three other waste-hauling companies and Charles City County, which leases land to Waste Management for a large landfill, sued Virginia challenging key provisions of the new trash statutes.

Jan 4, 2000 - The Department of Energy issues Record of Decision for Surplus Plutonium Disposition at Savannah River Site.The Department of Energy today announced its decision to dispose of up to 50 metric tons of surplus plutonium from the United States in a hybrid approach and to construct and operate three new facilities at its Savannah River Site (SRS).
